Johnny Mullins has over 15 years experience in architecture, interior design and development. He is an expert in all areas of the construction process and is best known for his exceptional ability to proficiently manage a project from beginning to end.
Very early in his career Mr. Mullins proved to have an entrepreneurial spirit and partnered with Gary Matthews and Victor Simpkins to form Onyx Architecture in 1994. After years as a practicing designer and ultimately learning more about development and construction, Mullins spearheaded a new development company named Essence Group in 1998. Several years later, Mullins realized that he had a passion for both architecture and development and that there was a strong need for both skills in the marketplace, so in 2004 he formed JM3 Design and Development.
His construction management experience includes working as the owner’s representative for Chicago Public Schools during the renovation of more than 28 schools with a budget between $1 million to $3 million for each school. He also acted as a liaison between principles, teachers, contractors and architects while reporting directly to the Vice President of Tishman Construction and the President of Chicago Public Schools Construction Services.
His interior architecture and design experience involves the completion of projects in the Residential, Commercial, Retail, Institutional and Historical areas. Mullins is a visionary Interior Designer who designs and selects furniture, flooring, finishes, lighting plans, and specifications & details for hundreds of homes across the United States and developers including Toll Brothers Inc., Kensington Homes, The Matzel & Mumford Org. and Continental Properties. In 2005 he was featured on HGTV for Residential Theme Design Project.
He’s designed and developed construction documents for various hospitals and medical facilities including Northwestern, Loyola and Marianjoy Hospitals. Other projects he’s worked on include Arthur Anderson’s, Dean Witter’s and Smith Barney’s offices, as well as, Bank of America’s headquarters in Chicago.
Mullins has held a variety of positions including Architectural & Construction - Project Manager, Director of Interior Design Services, and Facilities Manager for several prestigious Chicago firms including V.O.A Chicago, Jensen and Halsted Architects, G.H.K & Associates and Mary Cooke & Associates. Additionally, he served as Assistant Director of Interior Design and CAD professor at Columbia College for more than two years.
His professional affiliations include the National Council of Interior Designer Qualification (NCIDQ), the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the International Facilities Manager Association (IFMA), the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA).
